Issues
Pete Harckham is fed up with the mess in Albany. It’s time to get state government working for us again. Government Reform
Pete is running for the Assembly to be a part of the solution to the many challenges we face as a state by bringing his common sense, bipartisan approach to Albany to reform state government, call for greater transparency, and get New York moving in the right direction.
Protecting our tax dollars
Pete is a fiscal conservative who believes in small, effective government. That’s why he worked to close Westchester’s budget deficit and voted against a budget with any tax increase. He will fight in Albany to consolidate services, cap state expenditures, and eliminate wasteful, unnecessary spending.
Families
For too many families, the tragedy of teen drinking-related accidents and binge drinking at house parties is an increasing reality. I was one of the leaders in the effort at the Board of Legislators to close a loophole in state law that allowed parents to host parties where minors consumed alcohol by passing Social Host legislation in Westchester. We also passed legislation restricting the sale of cough medicine containing DXM or Dextromethorphan to minors. I have also introduced legislation to stiffen penalties for those convicted of driving under the influence in Westchester County.
Fair Share for Westchester Westchester residents are already paying high property taxes. Pete believes we deserve our fair share of state funding, and will fight to make sure Westchester receives critical state aid for our schools, roads, and other essential services.
Our Environment
Pete’s commitment to protecting the water and air quality in Westchester will continue to be a top priority in his work in the Assembly. He will fight for adequate staffing and funding for the Department of Environmental Conservation, to ensure that local municipalities and communities do not bear the financial burden of maintaining state mandated infrastructure necessary to keep our water clean and our septic systems working. Pete wants to pass legislation requiring fuel efficiency, enhanced clean transportation, encouraging light rail and bike friendly mass transit, and for a statewide anti-idling law like the one passed in Westchester County during his first term. He’ll fight to expand access to solar power, and encourage the creation of a regional smart grid.
