Lewisboro Ledger Endorses Pete Harckham

Editorial cites Harckham’s success in cutting taxes and on water quality protection

(Katonah, New York – November 3, 2011) The Lewisboro Ledger announced today the newspaper’s endorsement of County Legislator Pete Harckham (D, I- Katonah) for reelection to the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Harckham was first elected to the legislature in 2007. Last year, his colleagues on the board selected him as Majority Leader, giving Harckham a greater role in shaping policy.

The Lewisboro Ledger’s editorial endorsement said, “Voters should give Peter Harckham another term as county legislator, as his lofty majority leader position benefits the district he serves. Mr. Harckham is a northern county Democrat, one that advocates for the environment but also protects local government and residents from the costs of environmental mandates. He was also a major force behind the county budget decrease this year.”

The endorsement is an affirmation of the success Pete Harckham has achieved for area residents in his two terms in office. In this year’s budget, which Harckham helped craft, taxes were reduced 2.2% -- more than twice what was proposed by the county executive—and spending was reduced by $30 million. Even with the spending cuts, Harckham made sure that vital emergency response services were preserved. Harckham was also successful in protecting northern Westchester’s water supplies and in obtaining funds from New York City and the state to accomplish that.

In response to the Ledger’s endorsement, Harckham said, “When I was first elected in 2007, I told voters that I would focus on three priorities: reducing the size and cost of government while maintaining vital services; protecting our fragile drinking water supplies and environment; and safeguarding our families and empowering them to succeed during these difficult times. I’m proud to say that we have made great strides in cutting taxes and reducing spending, protecting our environment and safeguarding our families. But there is more work to be done.”

Peter Harckham represents District 2 on the Westchester County Board of Legislators, representing Bedford, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, North Salem, Pound Ridge and part of Somers.
